In other words, positive means that something is being added to the environment or situation, and negative means that something is being removed from the environment or situation. In behavior analysis, positive and negative are used to describe the stimulus change and not the effect. When looking at reinforcement versus punishment, it’s important to understand the stimulus change and the effect on the behavior. A young girl stays out for more than an hour past her curfew, and her parents have grounded her for a week. When two kids get into a battle about who gets to play with a new item, the mom literally takes away the item from all kids. Punishment, as effective as they are, does not always work.
